Tropical Explorers Summer Camp is a unique program designed
to engage campers, ages 6 to 12, in thematic programs and activities that allow them to learn while having fun. For eleven weeks campers are given the opportunity to be creative, explore new worlds, develop new interests and make new friends.
Tropical Explorers Summer Camp features:
- Eleven weeks loaded with exciting adventures, packed with
fun and education.
- Highly skilled professional educators and counselors.
- Different themes each week.
- Indoor and outdoor hands-on activities, including gallery
games, music, arts & crafts, drama, field trips to historic
sites and many more exciting summertime experiences.
- Fee includes one T-shirt, snacks and field trips. Campers must
bring their own lunch.
- This year’s field trips include such exciting locations as Miami
Metrozoo, Lowe Art Museum, and Butterfly World.
- Each Friday, we will have performers and other guests in the community engaging our campers. Some exciting visitors will include 21st Century Steel Orchestra, Bahamas Junkanoo Revue, Afro-Cuban Drummer Ezequiel Torres, Haitian Storyteller Liliane Louis, and many others.
Campers can be dropped off as early as 8:30 am and picked up no later than 5:30 pm. Curbside drop off is available on West Flagler Street, directly across from the Museum Tower building. No need to park. Museum Educators will be waiting on the north side of the road.

Historical Adventures
June 5 - SPECIAL ONE DAY CAMP
Begin the summer with an intimate look at how the Historical Museum of Southern Florida operates. Take part in a behind the scenes tour of our extensive objects collections. Design your own historical replicas from the days of the Tequesta and Calusa.
Florida Fun Fest
June 8– June 12
Spend the week discovering the past, present and future of the great green peninsula of Florida. Make colorful, quaint Sunshine State quilts. Explore the vast panoramas of the Everglades with
3-D endangered animal and ecosystem cubes. Get the facts about Florida’s dangerous wildlife with a visit by Miami-Dade County’s Anti-Venom Unit.
Splendid South America
June 15 – June 19
From the elegant cityscapes of Buenos Aires to the emerald expanses of the Amazon, South America is indeed splendid. Handle authentic artifacts and compose harmonious music from the region. Create multihued Iguazu Falls sand art. Prepare and eat traditional Incan cuisine.
Native American Traditions
June 22 – June 26
The native cultures of our continent are rich in tradition and majesty. Discover the way of life of the Miccosukee while riding an airboat and visit a working village in the Florida Everglades. Construct patchwork emblazoned Seminole dolls. Craft fascinating models of the 1000 year-old Taos Pueblo community complex.
Sea to Shining Sea
June 29 –July 3
From amazing Alaska to the island paradise of Key West, America is a land of wonder. Learn about our forefathers and their unique vision for our nation. Build Functioning Mighty Mississippi paddle boats. Gain knowledge of geology while creating Hawaiian
volcanoes that actually erupt.
Magic City Memories
July 6 – July 10
Miami is a cultural wonderland, rich in physical and natural treasure. Be a performer in the Julia meets Flagler movie, all about the city’s humble beginnings. Make colorful ‘wild parrots of Miami’ mobiles. Back by popular demand, we will also visit the pastel-hued
neighborhood of South Beach, armed with cameras.
Mysteries of the Far East
July 13 – July 17
The countries of Eastern Asia are rich in history and marvels. Learn about south Florida’s Japanese pioneer settlement of Yamato. Make adorable Maneki Neko cats. Paint beautiful Chinese picture scrolls and ancient wheat-straw boxes. Participate in a session about the history and construction of origami.
People and Places in Africa
July 20 – July 24
Africa, the wondrous continent, is endowed in rich culture and natural beauty. Get acquainted with the animals and geography of the region with a stunning slideshow produced by our museum’s president, Robert McCammon. Construct functioning Egyptian water clocks. Make ‘talking drums’ from Ghana and see how
instruments are used for long-distance communication.
Caribbean Mosaic
July 27- July 31
Travel through the relaxing, colorful islands of the Caribbean. See how people live in the quaint countryside of Haiti while building movable tap-tap buses. Make scary Puerto Rican vejigante masks. Handle artifacts, wear traditional costumes and compose songs about the area while participating in our Caribbean Map program.
Across Europe and the Middle East
August 3 – August 7
From ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, and Rome to the modern European Union, the region is justly famous for its stunning
architecture and rich traditions. Build time-honored Russian
matryoshka toys. Put together your own traditional Ramadan charity jars. Discover the glorious days of the English Empire
while designing Old English treasure boxes.
Marvelous Mexico
August 10 – August 14
Savor the sights the marvels of our next-door neighbor, Mexico. Discover the life of the area’s Meso-Americans as we construct dazzling Aztec bird plume shields. Make endearing yet traditional armadillo figurines. Sing and write Tejano songs and other regional music.
Adventure Islands
August 17 – August 21
Know what it takes to be a seagoing explorer. Build wooden floating pirate ships. Create authentic lighthouses that actually
illuminate. We also include a tour of South Florida’s oldest landmark- the breathtaking Cape Florida light on Key Biscayne.
