Summer Camp

Tropical Adventures Summer Camp is a unique program designed to engage campers, ages 6 to 12, in thematic programs and activities that allow them to learn while having fun. For weeks campers are given the opportunity to be creative, explore new worlds, develop new interests and make new friends. Call 305-375-1629 for more information.

4-Day Camp (July 6 - 9):

Free before and after care between the hours of:
8:30-9 am and 5-5:30 pm

Camp Highlights:

  • Weeks loaded with exciting adventures, packed with fun and education.
  • Highly skilled professional educators and counselors.
  • Different themes each week.
  • Indoor and outdoor hands-on activities, including gallery
    games, music, arts & crafts, drama, field trips to historic
    sites and many more exciting summertime experiences.
  • Fee includes a T-shirt, snacks and field trips. Campers must
    bring their own lunch.
  • Field trips to exciting area attractions.
  • Live performers and special guests from the community engage our campers.

Campers can be dropped off as early as 8:30 am and picked up no later than 5:30 pm. Curbside drop off is available on West Flagler Street, directly across from the Museum Tower building. No need to park. HistoryMiami staff will be waiting on the north side of the road.

Tropical Adventures Summer Camp is funded in part by The Children’s Trust. The Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County. With the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Camp Themes

Week 1: HistoryMiami
June 14 – 18
Miami is among the world’s most dynamic cities. Make an exciting documentation of the downtown area and South Beach with a special tour armed with cameras. Write your own ‘Miami stories’, and make spectacular models of the Magic City by day and by night.

Week 2: Saludos Vecinos!
June 21 – 25
Spend a fun-filled week touring the welcoming countries that span the Americas. Make sparkling Incan Jewelry and precise Mayan calendar mosaic plates. Take part in a Mexican and Central American fiesta, complete with food and music.

Week 3: American Enchantment
June 28 – July 2
Join us for a jaunt across our great nation. Experience the sights of beloved New Orleans while building Crescent City riverboats. See a magnificent slideshow on the nature of Hawaii and later build wooden masks. Compose ‘our America’ songs about immigration to the U.S.

Week 4: Land of Sunshine
July 6 – 8 *NOTE NEW DATE CHANGE*
See why millions have come to bask in the warmth of the Florida sun. Make two-fold freestanding sand art portraits of Florida nature. See the everyday life of a Florida cracker ranch. Take part in a film about the tough life of the Florida pioneer.

Week 5: Middle Eastern Marvels
July 12 – 16
The Middle East is steeped in tradition and history. Study the region’s amazing architectural wonders while creating zigzag books. Build dynamic hieroglyphic tablets. Participate in an exciting music and dance activity with our special guest Harmonic Motion.

Week 6: Native American Saga
July 19 –23
Native Americans in Florida as well as across North America have a proud heritage. Make genuine Seminole patchwork vests. Discover the cultures of the American southwest while molding Anasazi pottery. See the workings of a real Miccosukee village in the Florida Everglades.

Week 7: Africa City and Country
July 26 –30
Africa is a land of famous wildlife, rich culture, and bustling cities. See how children live in the metropolitan areas of Lagos, Nairobi and Cairo. Enjoy a fabulous wildlife adventure at Lion Country Safari. Make colorful beaded Kente hats.

Week 8: European Antiquity
August 2 –6
Europe has wondrous people and a glorious past. Learn about early Roman civilization while making ancient sundials and Pompeian frescoes. Build and play working mandoharps. See the elegant collection of art at beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

Week 9: Eternal Asia
August 9 –13
Experience the beauty and mystery of the continent of Asia. Make stunning Japanese Haori Jackets. Construct musical undersea wind chimes. See a kid’s view of celebrations in Southeast Asia while baking tasty Vietnamese Moon Festival fruit cakes.

Week 10: Caribbean Rhythm
August 16 –20
Sail off to the crystal clear waters and verdant islands of the West Indies. Make vibrant oatmeal drums and jam to a Cuban mambo. Write adventurous tales in old fashioned pirate talk. Build genuine Haitian metal figurines.
