(Grades 3-12)

Cape Florida Lighthouse
Climb to the top of the lighthouse, the oldest man-made structure standing in its original location in Miami-Dade County, and enjoy beautiful views of Stiltsville, the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse and the Miami skyline.

Students will:

  • explore the light-keeper’s home and grounds
  • gain a better understanding of life in nineteenth century South Florida.
  • learn about the Seminole War attack on the lighthouse and Cape Florida’s importance to the Underground Railroad

Everglades Adventure
Explore a traditional Miccosukee Indian Village, where locals illustrate their culture, housing and family life. Student leave with a better understanding of Native American culture and the life of the Miccosukee in the Florida Everglades.

Students will:

  • watch an alligator wrestling demonstration
  • observe the natural environment of the region while on an airboat ride
  • Browse the visitor’s center

The Barnacle
Experience life in turn-of-the-century Miami on a guided tour of Commodore Ralph Munroe’s home, “The Barnacle,” constructed in 1891 along the shore of Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove.

Students will:

  • learn about the labors and lifestyles of the pioneer community
  • explore the threatened tropical hardwood hammock ecosystem surrounding the house

Eco-History at Matheson Hammock
Visit a rare example of a “tropical hardwood hammock,” as well as other terrestrial and marine habitats on this outing.

Students will:

  • examine the ways humans have survived in this region for more than 10,000 years
  • gain a better understanding of the ecosystem and of environmental conservation efforts

Lummus Park
Visit Lummus Park, the site of the William English plantation slave house (later known as Fort Dallas), and the Wagner House.

Students will:

  • walk through the slave quarters of the English plantation
  • learn about slavery in South Florida
  • explore pioneer life in Miami

Virginia Key Beach
Discover one of Miami’s most treasured natural and historic sites, Virginia Key Beach. Opening to the public in February 2008, after a beautiful renovation. This walking tour will be available for reservations in February 2008.

Students will:

  • learn about the rich history of Virginia Key Beach and its role during segregation in South Florida
  • explore the ecosystem of this fragile beach
  • experience the renovated attractions
