The Miami Herald and the Historical Museum of Southern Florida have joined forces to
create an exciting new program to increase the Miami history literacy of area students.
Interested teachers can enroll their classrooms in a city-wide contest that will test their
students' reading and researching skills. (Did you know that research shows students who
read the newspaper achieve higher levels of academic success?)
Here's how it works:
Beginning September 18th, a "Question of the Week" will appear each Thursday in The
Miami Herald Neighbors section, and on the web at www.miamiherald.com/miamihistory.
Teachers and students will be offered a clue about an important person, place or event in
the history of Miami and will have a full week to find the correct answer. Participating
teachers will then keep track of the progress of individual students on a chart located
online here and at www.miamiherald.com/miamihistory. Each question will
be worth one point.
Teachers registering their classes in the program will be eligible for prizes for their
highest-scoring students at the end of each nine-week marking period. These top
historians from each class will be automatically entered in a new Junior History
Challenge - a city-wide competition to be held at the Museum in April. Participating
teachers also will receive a free Educator Membership to the Historical Museum of
Southern Florida.
